Sigiriya ("Lion Rock") is an ancient rock fortress in central Sri Lanka, about 170 km and 3.5 to 4 hours by car from Colombo. A 5th-century king built his palace on top of the rock, and a long staircase of more than 700 steps now leads to the summit. The foreign adult ticket is about $35. Go as soon as the gate opens to beat the heat and the tour buses.

A palace in the sky

Sigiriya is a granite column about 180 metres high, rising out of the forest. King Kashyapa, who ruled from 477 to 495 CE, moved his capital here and built a palace and fortress on top. After he died in battle, the site was abandoned and later became a Buddhist monastery.

Halfway up, in a hollow in the rock face, are the famous frescoes of women holding flowers. Beside the path is the Mirror Wall, once polished so well that the king could see himself in it. Visitors have scribbled poems on it for more than a thousand years.

At the base are some of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world, with symmetrical water gardens. At the foot of the final staircase, the entrance is flanked by two huge carved lion paws. The lion's head above them collapsed long ago. UNESCO listed the site in 1982.

A perfect morning at Sigiriya

Be at the gate when it opens. Climb while it is cool, then rest in the afternoon or add a second site.
