Gásadalur

A village that was cut off from the world until 2004, with a waterfall that falls straight into the Atlantic.

▶ Watch on TikTok

Gásadalur is a tiny village on the island of Vágar in the Faroe Islands, about 20 minutes by car from the airport. Until 2004 you could only reach it on foot over the mountains. Now a one-lane tunnel leads there. The big attraction is the Múlafossur waterfall, which drops about 30 metres into the sea. Parking is free and the walk to the viewpoint is short. The weather changes fast, so dress in layers.

The village the road forgot

Gásadalur sits on a green terrace high above the sea, with steep cliffs on every side. About 16 people lived here in 2025, and several houses stand empty.

Until the tunnel was blasted through the mountain in 2004, the only way in was a hard walk over mountains more than 400 metres high. The boat landing was poor, so fishing boats were kept near Bøur, and a stairway from the beach to the village was built in 1940.

Now you can drive in, but it still feels remote. The Gásadalstunnilin tunnel is 1.4 km long, one lane and unlit, with lay-bys to let traffic pass. Keep your headlights on.

From the village, the view looks out across the sea to the island of Mykines.
