Monemvasia is a walled medieval town on a huge rock off the east coast of the Peloponnese, in southern Greece. A causeway links the rock to the mainland village of Gefyra. The inhabited Lower Town is full of stone lanes, churches and old mansions turned into hotels, and a steep path climbs to the ruined Upper Town and the church of Agia Sophia. Come in spring or autumn, wear good shoes, and stay a night if you can.

A town hidden behind a rock

Monemvasia sits on a rock about a kilometre long and 100 metres high, joined to the mainland by a narrow causeway of about 400 metres. The name is often said to come from the Greek for "single entrance", because there was originally only one way in. It has been called the Gibraltar of the East.

The town was founded in the 6th century and was most prosperous in Byzantine times. It later passed between the Venetians and the Ottomans. Its wine trade gave the English name Malmsey to the sweet Malvasia wine.

Today the Lower Town is a small, quiet place with around 40 permanent residents, boutique hotels, restaurants and shops. Above it, the Upper Town is a ruin on the plateau, with the 12th-century church of Agia Sophia right on the cliff edge.

The Upper Town path is steep and uneven in places, with little shade. Wear shoes with grip, take water, and go early in the day.

A perfect day (or two nights) on the rock

Monemvasia is small, but it rewards slow walking. Go up to the Upper Town early, before the heat, and spend the afternoon in the Lower Town.

  • By car The easiest way. It is about 330 km from Athens, roughly 4 hours, by the Athens-Corinth highway and the Peloponnese coastal road. Park in Gefyra or near the causeway and walk in, because there are no cars in the old town.
  • By bus KTEL buses leave Athens from the Kifissos terminal via Sparta and take about 5 hours. They stop in Gefyra, a 10-minute walk from the rock.
  • From Sparta and Mystras Mystras, the Byzantine ruined city, is about 90 km (1.5 hours) to the north-west, so the two make a good pair.
  • Opening times The Upper Town has no fixed hours in the guides we checked. Go in daylight and check locally.

Good to know: no cars or motorbikes go inside the walls, so bring light luggage if you are staying in the Lower Town. Peak season is July and August, when restaurants should be booked ahead.

The Lower Town

Old Byzantine and Venetian mansions turned into boutique hotels. Atmospheric, and quiet once the day-trippers leave. The best ones fill months ahead for summer weekends.

Best for: atmosphere and the evening

Gefyra

The mainland village is cheaper and has more places to eat. The rock is a 10-minute walk away across the causeway.
