Ninh Binh is a region of limestone peaks, rivers and rice fields about 1.5 to 2.5 hours south of Hanoi. Its boat tours at Trang An and Tam Coc glide through caves, and the 500-step climb to Hang Mua gives the classic view. Go for the golden rice in late May to early June or in September and October, start early and expect crowds by 9 am.

Ha Long Bay on land

The Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list on 23 June 2014, for both its culture and its nature. It covers 6,226 hectares, including Hoa Lư, an ancient capital, and the Tam Cốc and Bích Động area.

The scenery is limestone mountains, rivers, lakes and swamps. The land has more than 600 plant species and 200 animal species, and the waters include protected striped-necked turtles.

Most visitors come for the boats. Rowers take you through low caves and between the cliffs, and the rice fields around Tam Coc turn gold twice a year.
